Recycling Partners of Jamaica is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and facilitating the recycling of plastic bottles across Jamaica. Our goal is to reduce plastic waste and its impact on the environment.
Recycling plastic bottles helps to reduce pollution, conserve natural resources, save energy, and decrease the amount of waste sent to landfills, thereby protecting the environment and promoting sustainability.
We accept PET (polyethylene terephthalate, represented by the #1 in the triangle at the base or side of bottles) and HDPE (high-density polyethylene, represented by the #2 in the triangle at the base or side of bottles) plastic bottles, commonly used for beverages, cleaning products, and personal care items.
We do not accept plastics that aren’t PET or HDPE. We also do not accept plastic bottles that have contained hazardous materials, such as motor oil or pesticides. Additionally, bottles with significant food residue or contamination may be rejected.
Please rinse the bottles to remove any residue. Place the caps back on the bottles or include them in the recycling container. You may crush the bottles to save space. Labels can be left on.
You can find the nearest collection point by using our online locator tool on the RPJ website or by perusing our social media pages @recyclingja on Instagram, Twitter, Tik Tok, Facebook and LinkedIn.
RPJ collects plastic bottles through various means, including community collection centers, drop-off locations, partnerships with businesses and schools, and organized recycling drives and events.
Collected plastic bottles are sorted, baled and exported to recyclers overseas, which then cleans, and processes the bottles into plastic pellets. These pellets are then used to manufacture new products, such as containers, clothing, and other plastic items.
Yes, RPJ has a Deposit Return Scheme, DRS, on plastic bottles, in which we pay $50 per kilogram for plastic bottles. That’s approximately $22 per pound. To earn the incentive, persons or organizations can register on our website or by contacting our Vendor Payments department at the Head Office.
Recycling creates jobs, supports local businesses that process and repurpose recycled materials, and reduces the costs associated with waste management and landfill maintenance.
RPJ offers a range of educational resources, including workshops, informational flyers, social media, the school programs, promotion at events and sensitization sessions, to educate the population about recycling.
RPJ has a School’s Recycling Programme which registers schools to earn from the DRS and receive support from RPJ to implement initiatives to ensure recycling is sustainable and supported by the community surrounding the school. Businesses can get involved by setting up recycling programs, hosting collection drives, or partnering with RPJ for educational workshops and events. Contact us for more details on how to participate.
You can sign up to volunteer through our website or by contacting our office. Volunteers can assist with collection drives, educational outreach, and various other activities that support our mission.
